The CW is where Kristin Kreuk got her start, or at least half of it is. “Smallville” premiered on the WB; which later merged with UPN to become the CW.

Now Kreuk stars in the new version of “Beauty and the Beast.” Catherine (Kreuk) is now a detective and the Beast, Vincent (Jay Ryan) is an Iraqi War veteran. We got to speak with Kreuk at the Television Critics Association press tour after the CW’s “Beauty and the Beast” panel.

Zap2it: Are you a fan of television’s previous “Beauty and the Beast” series that starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman?

Kristin Kreuk: I actually didn’t see the show very much. I think I was a little too young, and also didn’t have a TV. I’ve seen bits and pieces of it, though, and I like the themes behind “Beauty and the Beast.” In the Disney version and the fairy tale, the message is really beautiful and human, and I think it’s important for us to tell that story.

Smallville‘s Kristin Kreuk returned to Comic-Con Thursday with a new super man at her side — her Beauty and the Beast co-star Jay Ryan.

The pair, who are headlining The CW’s reboot of the ’80s hit, entered TVLine’s Con interview suite to discuss their familiarity with the original CBS series (limited), the story behind how Ryan’s “CW-ized” beast got all furry (chemicals and rage are involved) and whether Smallville fans will hold out for this hero the way they did for Clark Kent (“It’s a very different show”). And watch how excited they both get when I bring up the possibility of original beauty Linda Hamilton guest-starring…

Freshman series Beauty and the Beast and Elementary will be heading to Comic-Con next month, CBS Television Studios announced Tuesday.

The Beauty and the Beast panel will hit Ballroom 20 on Thursday, July 12 at 3:30 p.m., followed by the Elementary panel, also in Ballroom 20, at 4:40 p.m.

Loosely based on the 1987 CBS series about an ADA and a noble man-beast who make a connection, Beauty and the Beast is an updated love story — with Smallville‘s Kristin Kreuk as the Beauty and Jay Ryan as the Beast — that includes a procedural twist. The cast and executive producers are expected to appear on the panel.

Elementary takes a modern look at the cases of Sherlock Holmes in which Sherlock (Eli Stone‘s Jonny Lee Miller) is a recovering addict and consultant for the NYPD. Lucy Liu will portray his Watson. Both Miller and Liu will appear on the panel alongside executive producers Robert Doherty and Carl Beverly.

Former Smallville showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders are reuniting with their former co-star, Kristin Kreuk, on the new series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Peterson and Souders will serve as co-showrunners alongside writer/exec producers Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper (Brothers & Sisters) on the series, which is loosely based on the 1980s CBS drama of the same name.

Kreuk starred as Lana Lang on The CW’s Superman drama Smallville from 2001-09; Peterson and Souders exec produced the Tom Welling starrer from 2002 through its end in 2011.

The project also continues Petersen and Souders’ relationship with The CW, where they most recently served as consulting producers on The Secret Circle, which was canceled last month after its freshman season.

Beauty and the Beast, which stars Kreuk opposite Jay Ryan, launches in the fall at 9 p.m. Thursdays following The Vampire Diaries at 9 p.m.

A Modern Re-Telling of the Classic Story

Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk stars as Detective Catherine Chandler in The CW’s Beauty and the Beast, which will be premiering this fall.

Years ago, Catherine witnessed the murder of her mother at the hands of two gunmen.  Two gunmen who also tried to kill her.  Fortunately for her – but not for them – someone (or something) managed to save her life by attacking the two men.  Everyone told her it must have been an animal, but she’s convinced that her savior was human.

In the present day, Catherine is working as a homicide detective, along with her partner Tess.  A recent murder investigation leads them to Vincent Keller, a doctor who was reportedly killed years ago while serving in Afghanistan.  Of course, it’s not long before Catherine realizes that Vincent is very much alive…and very, very different.  When he becomes angry, he gives in to the beast living inside of him.  While Catherine agrees to protect his secret, she wants something in return: information about her mother’s death.

The CW’s version of this story is a more modern-day take on the original Beauty and the Beast series, starring Linda Hamilton.  Clearly the network is behind this show, giving it the coveted spot of Thursdays at 9:00 p.m., following their strongest performer, The Vampire Diaries.
